Track Talk

Friday nights under the lights always makes for some incredible racing, this was the third and final Friday night on the 2012 schedule. Once again the weatherman cooperated and the rain stayed away, the air was cool but the action on track was hot! Round 12 “Cruise Weekend” showcased three local classes and two memorial events.

After the invocation and anthem the Budget Car & Truck Rental Street Stocks were first on the track. In the first heat race #19 Aaron Anderson took the checkered flag followed by #28 Brennen Forseille in second and #34 Mike Schroeder a close third. The qualifier race saw a change of pace as the field wasn't inverted like it typically is, this meant that #19 Aaron Anderson found himself in the pole position. He was able to capitalize and took his second win of the evening. #34 Mike Schroeder finished second and #44 Craig Katelnikoff followed in third. This division is exciting to watch as there are many strong competitors and the racing has been close and exciting all season. The 50 lap Budget Car & Truck Rental Street Stock feature was the Wes Skakun memorial event. The fans were treated to another exciting race and the action started right after the green flag dropped. In turn three contact between two cars saw the #11 of Trudy Sawatzky spin, the resulting damage required her to be towed off the track. But that wouldn't be the last time the caution flag would fly, several laps later contact between the #19 Aaron Anderson and the #62 Kenny Heintz would send the #62 around and both of them to the back of the pack. A couple of cars fell out of the race with mechanical difficulties but when the checker flag fell #44 Craig Katelnikoff rose to the occasion and claimed the first place trophy in this memorial event. #15 Todd Pluhator had an excellent run finishing second, #34 Mike Schroeder had another solid race finishing in third. Even though Mike in the #34 didn't win he proceeded to treat the fans to some awesome donuts, always a fan favorite celebration.

The second division on track was the SKL Trailer Pro Trucks, they are a strong division this year. With the harvest season in full swing numerous trucks were absent but the action was still as exciting as ever! In the first heat #49 Shantel Firth had a dominant performance bringing home the win followed by #19 Rylan Utigard and #14 Wade Wohlford. In the divisions qualifier race, #27 Scott Lucas got the win with #19 Rylan Utigard in second and #50 Ben Pogoda in third. The SKL Trailer Pro Truck feature race of the night was 50 laps that started off with a bang. On lap one contact between the #12 Aaron Deagnon and #5 Debra Newnham resulted in the #12 taking a hard hit into the wall on the exit of turn four. The red flag came out as the track crew and tow trucks cleaned up while Aaron was checked and released by the EMT's. When the racing resumed the action was intense with lots of two wide racing for position. When the checkers came out #01 Alex Leschenko was the victor, unfortunately for him the celebration was short lived as the differential piled up on the cool down lap. Shantel Firth had another strong performance in the #49 truck finishing second with #50 Ben Pogoda on her bumper ending up in third.

The WSSL Auto Parts Super Late Model division was the feature class on the night. Several local competitors didn't make this event as they are prepping for the upcoming SuperSeal 200 event on September 1rst. In the first heat #14 Geln Hertzke took the win, #77 Greg Vangool was a close second and #67 Ken Ross was also very close finishing in third. In the divisions qualifier race #55 Jim Gaunt got the win with #22 Doug Bienia having an awesome run finishing second, #70 Trent Seidel in third. The WSSL Auto Parts Super Late Model feature race was the 75 lap Bryce Mann Memorial, this is the third year this event has been held. Glen Hertzke in the #14 took an early lead, three laps in #77 Greg Vangool suffered terminal electrical problems that ended his night. With 50 laps to go the fans enjoyed a tight three way battle for the lead, #70 Trent Seidel claimed the top spot and eventually the checkered flag along with the memorial trophy. Jim Gaunt kept his #55 in the hunt challenging the #70 numerous times but he had to settle for second, #14 Glen Hertzke stayed in the top three finishing third.

A huge thanks goes out to all of our hardy race fans that braved the cool evening and were rewarded with another great show!
