ROUND ELEVEN – HONOURING A PAST RACER
This weekend at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway we have the visiting Super Trucks (for the third of the four race series) on the track in addition to the local Part Source Mini Stocks and the Cooper Tires Thunder Stocks. The Thunder Stock division will honour a past racer in the division and compete in the annual Rick Fredrickson Memorial feature race.
DRIVER PROFILE – RYAN FREDRICKSON - #22 THUNDER STOCK.png)
Rick Fredrickson (my uncle) got involved in racing with Wes Skakun. Rick was the kid who got to scrub the black wheel rub marks off the door of the car. Rick raced back in the mid 80's when he was only 16 years old in the Thunder Stock division. He then left racing for a few years then returned in 2002 racing four years at the old Bridge City Speedway. In 2006, Rick entered in Auto Clearing Motor Speedway in two divisions, Mini Stock as well as Thunder Stock and after a year of jumping behind two window nets, he returned back to racing strictly Thunder Stock. Rick passed away in August 2007 and Rick’s friends and family joined at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway where he made his final laps at his wake shortly after his passing. I was honoured to give him the ‘Green, White, Checkered.’ Rick told me he would build me my first race car and after his passing, my Auntie Barb (Rick’s wife) left the car and tools to me. I began racing at 15 years old.
We have been slowly learning and improving through the past five years. The racing community has helped tremendously throughout the years as well as all of our loyal sponsors. The biggest thanks would go to two people, Eric Hamnett (crew chief and family friend) and Darren Fredrickson (crew member and father) who have stuck out the past five years trying to translate my driver talk to common sense and come up with some way to please me, even in the hardest times. My other crew Lisa, Chris and Brad are also members who help put the car on the track every year doing even the smallest things to prepare.
My family have always been supportive of my hobby including my grandmother Carol, my sisters Amy and Sarah and other extended family but mainly my mother, who appears at nearly every race and supports us in every way except giving us garage space.
The #22 Thunder Stock is in theme of the NASCAR #22 Caterpillar car (now the #31). Last year out car was involved in an accident that forced us to rebuild. We raced only three race days at the beginning of the year and returned for the last race of the season in 2011. This is the first full season with the new 1979 Chevy Impala and the previous car was raced way back at the old track as far back as 2003.
Thanks go out to Globe Excavating who is our main sponsor. They have contributed and supported us throughout the last five years giving us shop space and even tools for tricky tasks.
I am a Student at the University of Saskatchewan in the Edwards School of Business. During my summers off, I work at Globe Excavating operating heavy equipment under my boss and father Darren Fredrickson, but when it comes to racing, I get to be the boss, depending who you talk to.
