Track Talk

After a hot humid afternoon at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway the incredible action of the Sask Legends Series, Western Elite Stock Car Tour, Sport Compact Mini Stock and the Street Stock division was on display.

The green flag dropped at 6pm with the mini stock class on track first. The 10 Mini of Kevin Dyck got to the lead on lap 5 and held on for the win with Landry Boisvert in the 42 and the 7 of Darnell Schick close behind.

Next to take to the track was the new for 2012 Sask. Legends Series. They had a very impressive showing with 17 teams coming out for their first event, that meant they had enough cars to split the heat races into two groups.

At lap five of the first heat we saw an awesome battle between the 90 of Danny Meirer and the 21 of Blake Erb with the 90 taking the win. The 21 finished in second and Ernie Ludwig rounded out the top 3 in his 26 car.

Heat 2 was just as exciting, the 22 of Rick Walls and the 24 of Brad Blumer started battling for the lead on lap 5 with the 24 taking the lead in lap 7 and holding on for the win. The 22 stayed in second while the 4 of Dennis Kuntsmann rounded out the top 3.

The Street Stocks were up next for their first heat, the 34 of Mike Schroeder worked his way to the lead on lap 5 with the 3 of Brad Kliewer /Ron Eby and the 87 of Jason Wilki close behind. Mike Schroeder held on to take the checkered flag in his 34 car with the 62 of Kenny Heintz and the 87 of Jason Wilki closing in.

With the clouds moving in the Western Elite divers hit the track to put on an excellent show. Nick Allen and the 21 car showed he is back and ready to prove retirement is fun. He battled with Nathan Wank in the 48 and the 51 of Nick Jewel. When the checkered flag fell that was the finishing order. Before the race was complete a few drops of rain started to fall but mother nature must have enjoyed the action and held off for the time being.

The Mini stocks took to the track again for their second heat race and at lap 5 the 95 of Clay Wagner was leading with the 10 of Kevin Dyck hot on his tail. Contact between the 92 of Brennan Kirton and the 15 driven by Stan Reddekopp brought out the caution when both cars shed a bumper. On the restart Kevin Dyck took the 10 car to the lead when the 95 missed a shift. He was able to stay out front and take the checkered flag first with the 95 of Clay Wagner and the 14 of Zachery Jalbert right behind him.

The Legends returned to the track for their second set of heat races with an awesome battle for first between the 21 of Blake Erb and Danny Meirer in the 90 car. The 90 won the battle with the 21 coming in second and the 3 of R.D. Bergendahl following.

The next heat in the legends saw Brad Blumer's 24 car come out on top followed by Rick Walls in the 22 and the 13 of Chelsey Wilson brought it home in third.

Next was an action packed heat race put on by the Street Stock division. The 33 of Ryan Thompson came in with a flat left rear 3 laps in, Trudy Sawatzky spun in corner 2 bringing out a caution on lap 10 . After the restart the 33 had to return to the pits again for more repairs and the 34 of Mike Schroeder pitted with a flat right rear tire. Mike ended up buying a tire from the 44 of Craig Katelnikoff to make it into the Feature. The 87 also came in under the next caution as he required attention from his pit crew. When the dust finally settled Craig Katelnikoff took the checkered flag in his 44 car with the 19 of Aaron Anderson and 62 of Kenny Heintz in second and third.

The Western Elite Series came back out on the track again in their second heat of the night. The first 3 laps of racing gave the fans plenty of 3 wide action and showed just how skilled these drivers are. The win went to the 21 car of Nick Allen en route to perfect night followed by the 48 of Nathan Wank and the 12 of rookie driver Matthew Shirley. For 2012 he is taking over the seat in his fathers West car while Dan is devoting his time to take another shot at the NCATS regulars when they make their stop here on July 25th.

The first feature of the night was put on by the Mini stocks, it was a caution free 50 lap event that had some great racing throughout. The 95 of Clay Wagner took the early lead but Kevin Dyck in the 10 tracked him down and passed him on lap 10. They continued to battle and the 95 retook the lead a short while later, in the meantime Darnell Schick caught them in his 7 car. For the next 30 laps the 3 drivers exchanged the lead numerous times with 3 of those lead changes in the last 10 laps. The 7 of Darnell Schick took the white flag first and held on to receive the 50th anniversary checkered flag. The 95 of Clay Wagner and the 10 of Kevin Dyck crossed the finish line inches behind the 7 for second and third, while Landry Boisvert in the 42 and the 14 of Zachery Jalbert rounded out the top 5.

With the clouds approaching again we saw the Street Stocks take to the track for their 50 lap feature. They managed 17caution free laps until the 34 of Mike Schroeder spun on the front stretch. Craig Katelnikoff's 44 car ran over some debris that caused major right front damage. The race resumed but with 21 laps to go the rain started coming down in buckets. The caution came out and Aaron Anderson in the 19 found himself at the front of the pack in the abbreviated race.

The 50 lap Legends and West series feature races were postponed but will be ran at a later date.
