Round Eight Racing - RACE FOR A CURE

Auto Clearing Motor Speedway proudly supports the Canadian Cancer Society. Cancer affects us all and we are thrilled to host the third annual Race For A Cure Thunder Stock race. Thanks to Can-Do Delivery Services Ltd along with Cowan Graphics, Custom Courier, and the Media Group for sponsoring this awesome event. Fans - you can show your support of this worthwhile cause by making a donation!

In addition to the Cooper Tires Thunder Stocks other divisions competing this weekend include the Part Source Mini Stocks, the Western Sportsman division and the Budget Car and Truck Rental Street Stocks.

If you haven't purchased your tickets for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race coming up at the end of the month - do so soon! This two day event will feature great local divisions (Mini Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Street Stocks and ProTrucks) racing on July 26th with the feature of the night being the Astro Towing ProTruck 100. Then on July 27th, the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will come back to Auto Clearing Motor Speedway to compete in the Velocity Prairie Thunder 250. Local driver Dan Shirley will also compete! Then following that race, the Dakota Dunes Casino Western Canadian Super Late Model Championship Series will take the track racing in the SuperSeal 150. Thirty six teams have already registered for this exciting event. You don't want to miss it!

DRIVER PROFILE - SHAWN MAGEE - #22 MINI STOCK

Q: When and how did you get hooked on racing? A: When I was 9 or 10, our family got a couple of snowmobiles and I just loved riding them – as fast as I could. We moved to an acreage in mid 70’s and my neighbour raced sleds, both in Waldheim (ovals) and X-Country. I went to some of his races, met some cool people, then started racing myself. Turns out snow melts every so often here in Saskatchewan, which makes it hard to race sleds all the time. However, even with the snow gone, I met some more cool people, found myself racing motocross, then moved to BC, met some more cool people, raced Super Bikes… see a pattern?

Q: What made you make the move to oval racing? A: Well, a couple of things. I had been road racing my GT5 Datsun 1200 in Alberta and Manitoba, and a few years ago, sponsor dollars weren’t quite so hard to come by. Sponsor dollars dried up, and I needed another outlet. Enter another cool person; Jim Barnsley. We’d been racing together for a bunch of years already in AutoSlalom and ice racing, and I’d seen him run out here at the track, but hadn’t ever tried it. When Jim decided to go after his road racing titles in 2009 and 2010 (and he won a BUNCH of championships by the way – “We’re Not Worthy….”), he offered me his #41 Mini Stock ride in his absence. I tried it, it was a ton of fun, and now I’m hooked. Great track, fun racing and cool people.

Q: How would you rate your season so far? A: Not a stellar beginning. I’ve built a new Mini Stock this year from an 88’ Prelude that we yanked out of the bush. It was out there for a loonngg time. Can I tell you it was a dirty, evil thing, completely packed with mouse s**t? Likely not! LOL! Anyway, we got it cleaned up and more or less ready to go from a general chassis and safety standpoint, but didn’t l

ook at the motor at all – changed the oil and checked the plugs, that’s about it. Two laps into the first night of racing – in fact, just 2 laps into hot laps – the engine let go. I suspect there was a mouse in there somewhere! So, blown motor. Had 2 weeks to build another one, which we did with a couple of hours to spare before the race on the 3rd of June. That night went pretty well, the motor was strong, but for various reasons, we didn’t get the car setup at all. Extremely loose in and no way to adjust it. That’s a lot of fun, but it’s NOT the fast way around the track.

Q: What are your goals for the race season? A: Learn the car. Setup the car. Setup the driver. Learn to drive. Win some races. Short track oval racing is a very, very different animal than any other form of racing I’ve done. It’s a far more particular beast than I would have imagined. Because the races are short and a lap is only 17+ seconds long, you have to have a great understanding of what the car is doing under you, identify it, live with it during that race, and know how to change it when you get back to the pits. Very, very challenging.

Q: Other future racing goals? A: Just to constantly get better. To me, the challenge in racing is to better yourself. When you get to the top of your own game, you win the game – and the races. And of course, the goal is always to win championships. As for what I race? Mini’s are fun for now. SLMs are likely in the future, when I learn how to drive in circles properly, and land a sponsor. In the meantime, I still road race and AutoSlalom a little bit, and Matt [Bradley] is threatening to let me try his kart out at the Martensville Speedway.

Q: Who is your favorite Nascar driver and why? A: Jeff Gordon. I’ve always liked the way he carries himself, I like the way he races, he’s always aggressive, but doesn’t have to be a jerk about it. Seems like one of those cool people I’d meet at a race track.

Q: If you could race against (and beat) any of the SLM drivers...who would you race and why? A: Hmm, well, my initial reaction is to say Jim Barnsley, just because we’re friends and therefore arch rivals on the track, but you know, I’m definitely going to have to say Trent [Seidel]. Now that I know him a little bit from working with him on the executive, I know that losing really, really p**ses him off. It’s always the most fun when you poke the bear, ya know? LOL!

Q: What if anything have you learned about the SSCRA being on the executive this year? A: Wow, yea. The SSCRA has pulled off amazing things with this track. Most people, even a lot of club members, don’t realize what a phenomenal accomplishment the creation of this facility really is, and just as important, how great it’s being run. Coming in only a few years ago, I see it all with fresh eyes. Everyone involved should be very proud. The racing is great, the venue is first class. My hat's off to everyone.

Now to ramble a bit…. I just have to point out that ACMS is a club owned facility, not a corporate entity. Every member of the executive, every member of the club is an owner and responsible for its great success. The executive, our active membership and our volunteers (Thank you volunteers, we’d be pooched without you!) work their butts off day in and day out. Their passion for racing shines through. Again, cool people.

Q: Anything else you want to say to the fans of Auto Clearing Motor Speedway? A:Yea, thank you fans! You make our racing possible! Thanks for coming out when it’s only +2 with a 274 mile-an-hour wind out of the north. You are a hardy (crazy?) bunch to be sure. Please come down to the pits after the races and shoot the breeze with us. We really enjoy talking with you, we’re always interested in answering your questions or in what you have to say. Oh, and watch for a fan forum on our web site in the next couple of weeks. We really want you to be able to get closer to the action through asking questions and making comments – this is your track too!
