Round NiNe Racing Welcome race fans to Auto Clearing Motor Speedway! Tonight is a local race event with the Part Source Mini Stocks and the WSSL Auto Parts Super Late Models. We will also see the SKL Trailers Pro Trucks on the track for their qualifying races leading up to their Astro Towing Pro Truck 100 in conjunction with the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race. Driver Profile - Glen Hertzke - #14 super Late Model
I remember hiding behind people in the stands when the loud cars went by. I also remember many sun burns watching races in the hot summer sun, mostly the right side of my face and arm. I remember playing under the grandstands, selling programs, and loving it when a car went flying off the track into the open field, or seeing a wheel fly off a car and roll way into the farmer’s field. I don’t remember a lot of watching Dad race, even the car number 14 which number I carry on my own car. I remember seeing it, but not too much else about it, other than the few pictures we have of dad’s racing were of that car. I remember Dad helping Brien Wilson, and Oscar Olson. I do remember dad driving Oscar’s car, the number 75, for the 50 lap features. Dad drove, because it got too hot in the car for Oscar. I remember dad helping Greg Greer with his claimer car, and that was my first real involvement, although I was too young to go into the pits. We went and worked on the car quite a bit, I think dad worked on it, and I stood back and watched. I began racing in 1994, I bought a Street Stock with Dwayne Downing from Joe Leemans. We put a season of practice laps in before the season started. We switched off driving, Dwayne drove the two heats, and I was thrown in for the feature and visa-versa the next week. My first race I started on Pole in the feature and finished 3rd. I remember how great it felt to finish that good in my very first race. I was racing against 10 year Street Stock veterans. In 1996 I tied for the championship with Chris Shirley. I have learned to never wash your car the night before you race in 1998. Lyndon stone was leading the points going into the final night. He had really bad luck that night, and all I had to do was start the feature and run about middle of the pack. I tried to start the car and it would not start. Between Dad and John Garman they swapped out the distributor in the lineup, but the car would just not fire. We had sprayed the dash down with water the night before and the ignition switch corroded over-night. I lost the championship by 8 points. But it was time to move on to Supers … I bought a car I had watched for many years race head to head against Jim Gaunt. It was previously owned by Barry Powers. My first win in Super Late Model came very early. It was a last lap pass on Trent Seidel on the high side, I couldn’t believe it. I think I have it on a VHS tape somewhere. That car worked great and was good enough to help me win the 2004 championship. We also were able to get the Bridge City Speedway track record with that car. The greatest moment in that car was winning the 2007 championship racing bumper to bumper with Trent after the birth of my son Kyle just 3 days before. Kyle was in intensive care at the RUH, and I didn’t even want to go to the track. Before I left the hospital before the races I told him I was going to win it for him! Trent didn’t give it to me though and he was pretty hungry for it. Despite a late race tangle with Trent, we came out on top. It was probably the greatest racing moment of my career. I came into the 2012 season not knowing what to expect, but knowing I had to change something because the last two years hadn’t met my expectations. We now have a new set-up under the car and so far it is working great. I’ve tried for 14 years to win a big race (invitational) and have lost my share. Finally this year I was able to do it. It was such a great feeling to finally win the big one! Now I can’t wait for the next big one. I have to thank everyone that supported me in my track life, Mom, Dad, Granny, Krys, Kyle, and the Crew: John Garman, Brent Olson, Richard McComber, Rick Beynon, Darcy Meier, and past crew member Greg Greer. I have numerous sponsors over the years and appreciate all of their support as well. Points Standings (as of July 21, 2012)
