ACMS THIS WEEKEND - ROUND SIX RACING
On the track tonight is the Western Elite StockCar Tour in their second race of the season at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway; the SKL Trailers ProTrucks, the Cooper Tires Thunder Stocks, and the WSSL Auto Parts Super Late Models competing in a regular points meet.
Driver Profile - Tim Kammer- #04 Western Elite
Here is my racing history: Around my grade 12 year, a man named Brian Carter moved to my home town of Raymore. He was a stock car racer and was trying to start a club and race track. He held a meeting so me and my brother Doug being somewhat gear heads decided we better go. At the meeting there were mostly older men (WE WERE 17) and we thought they were going to build a quarter mile track. When Brian told us he wanted to build a stock car track, we looked at each other and thought what’s a stock car? He told us, just find an old car that’s got a good heavy frame, make it as light as possible, throw in a roll cage and a used engine and have some fun. So, we bought a 1975 Nova for $100 and started the striping process. Being farm boys, we had access to some pretty good tools, but the only ones that we seemed to know how to use were the hammer and (our favourite) the torch, so about six bottles of gas later and a lot of burnt skin, we had that Nova stripped to about 1000 lbs. We thought wow we’re going to be fast! Then, Brian stops in to see how we’re doing; he takes a look at the car, shakes his head and starts laughing. He said that we cut out to much! Things like shock mounts and floor boards, I guess are required. Anyway, we bought another Nova and this time with a little help we got our first stock car to the track. Now I am sure you have heard of the name of Darryl Potts, well turns out he’s from Watrous, and he too built a race car. We go over to take a look at his car to make sure he built it right (BECAUSE NOW WE’RE PROS) well; Darryl’s car was a 1971 Mach 1 with a 351 engine (about 800 hp). He’s got a chromoly roll cage, a 9" floater rear end, a racing seat, and who would have guessed tires made for racing! Me and my bother just looked at each other and said “now we know what a stock car is!”! We raced on that dirt track for four years having the time of our lives and falling in love with the sport, learning all the tricks from guys like Darryl, Brian and Neil Dunvelle. In our final year at Last Mountain Speedway, we won the track championship and driver of the year. I then moved to Regina and bought a Z99 Super Late Model from Mike Alexander and joined the Western Speed Association (WSA), and raced against some of the fastest stock car drivers in western Canada - guys like Dan Shirley, Trent Seidel, Alex Leschenko. This was a real challenge going from dirt to pavement but with lots of help from my pit crew (and wife) we figured it out and won some races and in 1993, we finished 4th overall in western Canada. After that I took a break from racing but always stayed in touch with the racers and tracks. In 2005, my 16 year old son Landon was looking at old pictures and said why don’t you still race? That was all it took to light the flame again. Together we built a Street Stock and joined Kings Park Speedway and raced until 2009. In 2010, we bought a Western Elite car from the Harding’s and joined the Western Elite StockCar Tour, winning rookie of the year.
Why do you race? I get asked that question a lot and I guess the answer is simply it is an adrenalin rush, although it can be very expensive and a lot of hard work. When you build or help build a race car, and that car works like it is supposed to, and you win a race there is no better feeling in the world.
Tell us about your pit crew. When you have raced for over 20 years I have a lot of people to thank, the first and most important being my wife Renee who has always supported me in my racing career and has spent many long days and nights at the race track (she was also one hell of a dirt track driver and won many races in Raymore). She is currently my crew chief and radio spotter (talk about trust) also my son Landon is my tire specialist, and Gerald Halvorson is my mechanic.
How do you like racing in the Western Elite? I enjoy it very much, it is very professional and the drivers are all top notch, many competing also in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. The cars all look great and they are very competitive with the rules and the introduction of the 604 crate engine. We usually qualify within a few tenths of a second of each other and any car can win on any night. The racing is close with cars going two or even three wide for most of the race.
