NASCAR IN SASKATOON!

Auto Clearing Motor Speedway is pleased to welcome the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series drivers and crews back to Saskatoon to compete in the Bayer Crop Science Velocity Prairie Thunder. This is the third year this 250 lap race has been held in Saskatoon. Two previous races and two winners, who will take home the title in 2011?

#22 Scott Steckly, won the inaugural Velocity Prairie Thunder race in 2009 and he is Steckly is coming off a big win in Vernon B.C. this past weekend where he had qualified there for the pole position. In all six series races so far this year, he has finished in the top five in each of them - that’s why he is at the top of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series leader board. #17 DJ Kennington was last year’s winner here at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway and is second in the points chase. He has had one win this season and is looking to get his second win here.

Local driver Dan Shirley #46 will make his debut into the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. He has put many laps on at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway and definitely is the guy with home track advantage. He was out on the track a couple of weeks ago testing the new car and getting the setup just right for this event. #51 Nick Jewel, #48 Nathan Weenk and #36 Shannon Harding are no strangers to Auto Clearing Motor Speedway as they have competed in the former Western Elite Series which had regular stops at this track.

Dakota dunes Casino Western Canadian Super Late Model Championship Series

If NASCAR wasn’t enough of a show for you…then sit back down and get ready for the Western Canadian Super Late Model Championship Series SuperSeal 150. This is the third of the five race series. These drivers are raring to go as their last event was cancelled due to rain. EMOND, SKELTON and SEIDEL took the top three positions on the leader board following the first race event.

As of July 25th, thirty six teams had registered to vie for a spot in this feature race including our eleven local Super Late Model drivers, two youngsters (14 year olds) and a number of out of towners.

Driver profile - Super Late Model #55 - Jim Gaunt

Q. Tell us about when you first started circle track racing, when, where, what kind of car. A. About 30 yrs ago - at Bridge City Speedway past Sutherland - drove a1966 Chevelle and Pam did all the lettering on it!

Q. Where do you get most of your technical information, magazines? Websites? Trial and error? A.Mike Hinz, cause he knows everything - I buy all my parts there, at least the ones he tells me I need :)

Q. Tell us about your current car, are you happy with the way it handles? A. Very happy with the new car. It's a good one.

Q. You have had a lot of on track battles with many competitors but in particular, Trent Seidel and you have remained good friends. How does that happen ha ha? A. Who says we're friends?

Q. What is your opinion of the crate motor in the local SLM division as you have competed under both open and crate rules? A. Best thing we've ever done to bring the cost of racing down and to make things more competitive. I wish we had done it earlier.

Q. It is our hope that Jim Gaunt continues to race for a long time yet, can you confirm this at this time? A. This is my latest 'last new car'. :)
