On behalf of President Andrew Clewes and the entire Executive Committee I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway in one form or other this past year and to wish everyone all the best this holiday season.

We have already announced that admission prices, season ticket prices, and flex pak prices will all remain unchanged for 2008.

Again all the best this holiday season!

Former Stock Car Association Treasurer Pleads Guilty (December 04, 2007)

A Saskatoon woman faces justice after another non-profit organization is the victim of fraud. Candace Bradley has pleaded guilty to charges of fraud over $5 thousand and theft. This, after close to $15 thousand disappeared from the Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association, operators of Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. Bradley was the treasurer of the Association in 2005, the year the money disappeared. The SSCRA's past President Shawn Hill says he and ALL members of the Association feel violated. Hill says even though Bradley had passed a criminal check when she was elected as Treasurer, the association has taken further steps to ensure this doesn't happen again. Bradley will be sentenced January 24th. The prosecution says it will demand retribution.  Hill says if that fails, the Stock Car Association may use other legal means to get the money back.

Scott Campbell Makes Fourth Trip to ROTAX Grand Finals (November 28, 2007)

Scott Campbell from Saskatoon, Canada is making not his second, nor his third, but rather his fourth trip to the Grand Finals, making him one of the most experienced drivers in ROTAX MAX Grand Finals history. “My results keep getting better and better every year. Who knows, if a little luck goes my way this could be the year I get up on the podium.” Scott’s assessment is spot on. There’s no doubt by anyone that’s watched him run over the past few years that he has the talent to run up front. But, he’s also had some very disappointing luck that’s held him back,. Scott describes his mental attitude right now as very relaxed. “I’m quite comfortable right now. I know what to expect and I’m ready for the racing to begin,” said the likeable Canadian. Scott has raced karts for 17 years alongside his father who owns a kart shop back in Canada. [More]

General Meeting Recap (November 20, 2007)

Although the attendance at last night's General Meeting was very light several updates were provided to those in attendance. Items of particular interest included the announcement that the area next to the concrete retaining wall, extending from the corner 1/2 grandstands to the corner 3/4 RV Parking has recently been paved. It is hoped that this paving which has been done courtesy of Central Asphalt, will result in better drainage and less soil erosion whenever it rains. Additional paving in the infield are is scheduled to be done prior to the start of the season to also accommodate better drainage in that area, lessening the extent of muddy areas that have existed after rainfalls.

It was also announced that efforts are ongoing to have transponders in place in time for the 2008 race season. Additionally a work party schedule will be developed for the 2008 season with the expectation that each registered team be listed on the work schedule 5 times during the season. Efforts are also being put into the development of a 'School of the Week' and 'Sports Team/Youth Club' program whereby schools, sports teams, or youth related clubs can obtain tickets to the races. Details on these programs will be announced s they are firmed up. Jan 07 at 7:30 pm - Executive Committee Meeting at John Remai Centre

Remembrance Day (November 08, 2007)

The poppy is the recognized symbol of remembrance for war dead in Canada, the countries of the British Commonwealth, and the United States. The flower owes its significance to the poem In Flanders Fields, written by Major (later Lieutenant-Colonel) John McCrae, a doctor with the Canadian Army Medical Corps, in the midst of the Second Battle of Ypres, in Belgium, in May 1915.

The poppy references in the first and last stanzas of the most widely read and oft-quoted poem of the war contributed to the flower's status as an emblem of remembrance and a symbol of new growth amidst the devastation of war.

Click here for more information on Remembrance Day and for the words to In Flanders Fields. Please take a moment or two on Sunday, November 11th to pay tribute to those that have sacrificed their lives on our behalf.

Getting to Know Your Champions! (October 31, 2007)

In the interest of providing race fans an opportunity to get to know the six division champions a bit better, I recently interviewed all six with a set of similar questions. Looking back over the transcribed interviews, many of the comments, although stated differently, provide much the same insight into why each of the six drivers won their respective divisions. Over the course of the next couple of weeks each of the interviews will be posted for your reading.

Today's conversation is with the Saskatoon Hyundai Sport Compact Mini Stock Champion, #19 Aaron Anderson. [Click here for interview].

Powder Puff Girls by Cassie Hawrysh of the The Regina Leader Post  (October 30, 2007)

Don't let the name deceive you. We're not talking about some Saturday morning cartoon - Powder Puffs are the women of Regina Auto Racing! Ranging in age from 16 to 40, Whitney Shuba, Teri Upson, Melody Longhren, Sheena Jorgenson and Bev Ostrom make up a good portion of the Powder Puff division; they all fell in love with racing immediately. [Click here for complete story]

This story was published in the Regina Leader Post last Thursday, and although it does not pertain to Auto Clearing Motor Speedway it does provide a bit of an insight into how people get hooked on racing.]

Foundation Started for 2007/08 (October 28, 2007)

A good mix of individuals from both the 2006/07 and 2007/08 Executive Committees took time out of their busy schedules on Saturday to participate in a planning session for the upcoming year. In addition to kicking around several ideas, some old and quite a few new, the 27 people in attendance set out responsibilities and then identified key tasks, priorities, and timelines for each area of responsibility. Directors will now take the information from Saturday and build a set of more detailed set of plans for each of their respective areas and get down to work. If you have any ideas that you think may improve your experience, as a driver/crew member or fan, at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway please contact any of the Executive Committee members or send us an email.

Sask Drivers Bring home some Hardware (October 23, 2007)

The Western Canada Motorsports Association, the Western Canadian road race sanctioning body, awards banquet was held in Edmonton this past weekend, with Saskatchewan racers bringing home their share of the hardware.

Noel McAvena, former Mini Stock champion at Kings Park Speedway in Regina, won the Regional Championship in Improved Touring 2 with his Neon.  Steve Molinelli of Saskatoon, who competed in the Sport Compact Mini Stock Invitational at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway in August was runner up in his Integra, and Jim Barnsley finished third for the season in his red (not to be confused with his white) Neon. Improved Touring rules are quite similar in car preparation to the Sport Compact Mini Stock rules.

Another trophy winner was Shawn McGee, another participant in the Sport Compact Mini Stock Invitational this year, who won the GT5 class for the region. It appears the ability of these drivers to turn 'right' has not been hampered by all the 'left' turning they have been doing on local stock car ovals. Congratulations!

Western Elite Division Trophies Spread Around (October 22, 2007)

As was the case with the Sport Compact Mini Stock Division, the Western Elite Division Trophies handed out at Saturday's Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association's Annual Awards Banquet were spread around quite a bit. Seven different Western Elite drivers took home some hardware on Saturday.

Division Champion, #46 Dan Shirley took home both Championship Trophy and Most Feature Wins Trophies, two trophies which went to the same drivers in every division other than the Lucas Oil Super Late Model Division.

The only other double winner in the Western Elite Division on Saturday night was #49 Ben Busch, who nabbed both the Most Improved Driver and Most Gentlemanly Driver Awards. Busch who quite possibly had his best year of racing yet, was certainly deserving of both awards.

Whilst Rookie-of-the-Year honors in the Western Elite Division went to #48 Chris Dennis, Chris's brother #24 Scott Dennis took home the 3rd Place Trophy. The Dennis's deserve added recognition for making the trip from Edmonton, Alberta to take in all eight Western Elite Division races held at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway.

Les Harding, who changed his car number from #29 to #69 mid way through the year in an attempt to change his 'luck', was the most obvious choice to receive the Phoenix Award for overcoming adversity during the year. Rounding out the Western Elite trophy winners were #21 Nick Allen who took home the 2nd Place Trophy and #95 Paul Savoie who went home with the Best Looking Car and Crew Trophy. [Click here for full list of awards]

Utigard Best Looking/Most Gentlemanly (October 22, 2007)

Ray Utigard not only captured the Best Looking Car and Crew Trophy at Saturday's Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association's Annual Awards Banquet, he also took home the Most Gentlemanly Driver Award and the 3rd Place Trophy for the NAPA Auto Parts Pro Truck Division. Utigard drove the #18 truck this year and ran a pretty consistent program, challenging for the lead on many a night.

Division Champion, Mike Dionne who drove the #1 SKL Trailers Pro Truck, took home both the Championship Trophy and Most Feature Wins Trophy.

The Rookie-of-the-Year in the NAPA Auto Parts Pro Truck Division was #69 PJ Kondra, who incidentally also had a pretty good looking truck. The Most Improved Pro Truck Driver, for the second year in a row, was #8 Andrew Clewes. Clewes won this same award at the 2006 banquet. Another repeat winner was #64 Stan Reddekopp who, for the second year in a row, took home the Phoenix Award, for overcoming adversity throughout the season. Perhaps 2008 will be a better year for Reddekopp.

Rounding out the NAPA Auto Parts Pro Truck trophy winners was #48 Roger McConnell who took home the 2nd Place Trophy. [Click here for full list of awards]

Thunder Rookie also Most Improved (October 22, 2007)

Thunder Stock rookie #19 Rylan Utigard was not only deemed the Rookie-of-the-Year in the Hertz Equipment Rentals Thunder Stock Division this year, he was also judged to be the most improved driver of the year as well. In addition to these two trophies Utigard also took home the 2nd Place Trophy from Saturday's Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association's Annual Awards Banquet.

Top driver in the Thunder Stock Division #2 Sheldon Bradlow, took home both the Championship Trophy and the Most Feature Wins Trophy.

Voted the Fan's Favourite driver #81 Barry Stefaniuk was judged to be the Most Gentlemanly Driver by his peers and took home a trophy to prove it. The Thunder Stock winner of the Phoenix Award was #87 Tristan Saunders.

Rounding out the Thunder Stock Trophy winners was #23 Kevin Nixey who took home the 3rd Place Trophy and the Best Looking Car & Crew Trophy. [Click here for full list of awards]

Street Stock Trophies Go Out of Town (October 21, 2007)
All but two of the nine Tiger Automotive Street Stock Trophies handed out at the Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association's Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday night went out of town. The only trophies to stay in town were the two won by #98 Bryan Johnson, the Points Championship and Most Feature Wins Trophies. For Johnson, this was the eighth consecutive year that he has captured the Street Stock Championship. A feat not likely to be matched any time soon.

At times this year both #99 Cory Kallis and #36 Darryl Potts gave Johnson a bit of a run for his money. Kallis, from Warman, SK finished the year in second place and took home the 2nd Place Trophy. For the second year in a row, Kallis also took home the Best Looking Car and Crew Trophy.

Potts, from Watrous, SK took home the 3rd Place trophy as well as the much deserved Most Gentlemanly Driver Trophy. The Rookie-of-the-Year and Most Improved Driver trophies headed by Highway #11 to Prince Albert and can be viewed in #27 Scott Lucas's trophy case. The Phoenix Award went to #47 Gerry Hobbis from Vermillion, AB. Congratulations to all Street Stock award winners and thanks to all of the out of town drivers that drove into Saskatoon each race day. Your presence was greatly appreciated. [Click here for full list of awards]

Sport Compact Mini Stock Trophies Spread Around (October 21, 2007)
Sport Compact Mini Stock drivers were in a sharing mood Saturday night with seven different drivers sharing in the nine pieces of hardware that were given out at the Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association's Annual Awards Banquet Saturday night at TCU Place. The only double trophy winners on the night were the #19 duo of Aaron Anderson and Kelly Voss and #41 Jim Barnsley. Anderson/Voss took home a trophy for the Most Feature Wins in addition to the most important trophy of the night, the Points Championship trophy. Barnsley took home the 2nd Place Trophy and the Most Gentlemanly Driver trophy, a trophy which he shared with #88 Alison Nagorski last year.

By having their names etched on the Points Championship trophy, Anderson/Voss are the first names other than 'Vangool' to appear n the trophy. Greg Vangool won in 2004, the inaugural year for Mini Stocks, Frank Vangool won in 2005 and last year Frank and Greg shared the Championship. This year the best that the Vangool's could do was Frank's third place finish.

Although all the many rookies in the Sport Compact Mini Stock Division improved over the course of the season, a couple in particular seemed to stand out above the rest as the season wore on; #4 Todd Jalbert from Waldheim and #82 Jonathan Neufeld. At the end of the day when all the tallying was done both came away winners as top rookie honors went to Jalbert and Neufeld laid claim on the Most Improved Driver award.

The Best Looking Driver and Crew trophy went to the Forseille Family Racing team of Gerry, Cheryl, and rookie Brennan Forseille and their #28 1995 Neon.

Rounding out the Sport Compact Mini Stock Division trophy winners on Saturday was another rookie, #1 Scott Barrand, who took home the dubious Phoenix Award for persevering through the year in spite of some tough luck along the way. Congratulations to everyone. [Click here for full list of awards]

Vangool Carts Off Most Trophies (October 20, 2007)
Greg Vangool was the big winner at Saturday's Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association's Annual Awards Banquet held at TCU Place. Vangool who drove the red #77 Super Late Model had pretty well a dream year, claiming four of the seven possible trophies he could have won.

The 2006 Co-Champion of the Sport Compact Mini Stock Division, Vangool jumped into the Lucas Oil Super Later Model Division this year with all cylinders running full bore. Backed by a great team, headed up by crew chief Tom Vangool, on most nights Vangool looked like he had been racing SLM's for years. Vangool's first taste of Super Later Model action was in the NEWALTA Late Model Challenge Series opener on May 26th, where he finished sixth in his heat and a respectable 11th out of 34 drivers in the feature race. Vangool followed up his NEWALTA Late Model Challenge Series experience by winning his first ever Super Late Model Division race, the opening heat race of the night a couple of weeks later. Vangool stayed on the podium all night that night, claiming second spot in the qualifier and third in the feature.

And Vangool only got better as the season progressed and he gained more seat time. By the time of the NEWALTA Late Model Challenge Series Season Finale on September 22nd, many a fan felt Vangool had a legitimate chance of winning the feature. Vangool came close, finishing 2nd in his heat and 4th out of 35 cars in the big race. Although he didn't win the big one that day Vangool turned some heads in time trials, posting a 14.368 second lap, knocking almost 4/10 of a second off the existing track record established by #14 Glen Hertzke back in May.

Vangool challenged for the Lucas Oil Super Late Model Division points lead for most of the summer, with only a couple of minor set backs preventing him from doing better than 3rd place by year's end,. He finished only 11 points out of the lead and 5 points out of second place. In addition to taking home the 3rd place trophy, Vangool took home the Most Feature Wins, Rookie-of-the-Year, and Most Improved Driver trophies. Not a bad night for a converted Mini Stock driver. In addition to the Points Championship, the only other SLM trophies to escape Vangool's grasp were the Best Looking Car and Crew and Most Gentlemanly Driver Trophies which #14 Glen Hertzke captured and the Phoenix Award for perseverance that #09 Doug Bienia claimed for the second straight year.

Last year's Super Late Model Champion #70 Trent Seidel who settled for the 2nd Place Trophy, took little comfort in the fact that his 2006 race suit would remain within eye sight of the Championship Trophy. Due to an off season weight loss program, Seidel sold his 2006 race suit to Glen Hertzke, this year's Champion, who chided that "the suit is now up for bids from anyone that wants to win next year". Herm Hordal, head marketer at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway Marketing heads out bright and early tomorrow (Thursday) morning for Martinsville, Virgina to take in the Subway 500 NASCAR race and help establish a relationship with the City of Martinsville, on behalf of the Town of Martensville. Hordal will be joined en route by his son Craig, a City of Edmonton police officer, and five members of the Osborne family from the Regina area. According to Hordal, "we're in for a very busy few days, I've spoken to the Mayor of Martinsville this morning and they've built us a pretty extensive agenda of events/tours, including morning tours in the pit area. I can't wait to get down there." By the sounds of it, Hordal and his delegation are in for one of those experiences of a lifetime. A full report will be provided on their activities upon their return.

Clewes Re-Elected (October 16, 2007)
Current association President Andrew Clewes was one of five individuals re-elected by acclamation at last night's Annual General Meeting. Also re-elected by acclamation were 1st Vice President Shawn Hill, 2nd Vice President Brent Olson, Secretary Jim Barnsley, and Treasurer, John Rees. Whilst Hill and Rees are new to their positions, Olson and Barnsley were re-elected to the positions they hold on the present Executive Committee.

Under the slightly revamped governance model that was approved by the general membership in September, the 2007/08 Executive Committee consists of 19 members, up one from the present 18. This increase comes about by the addition of two positions, a 7th director and a 7th junior director and the elimination of one position, the Past President's position. Also in accordance with the approved changes in September, the terms of all Executive Committee positions, except those of junior director, are now two years in duration, with 50% of all two year term positions up for re-election year.

Directors elected last night were Trent Seidel, Richard Woodvine, Doug Bienia, and Cory Kallis, all for the last year of a two year term and Doug Cooper, Todd Jalbert, and Bill Zubrecki for the complete two year term.

Junior Directors elected were Leah Hill, Al Bakke, Jordan Hill, Laurel Thompson, Cliff Pompu, Matt Bartsch, and Heather Skakun. Technical Advisors elected were Shawn Hill (Western Elite Division), Ron Eby (Street Stock Division), Justin Brennan (Thunder Stock Division), Doug Giordano (Super Late Model Division), Wayne Schick (Sport Compact Mini Stock Division), and Stan Reddekopp (Pro Truck Division). Congratulations to everyone!

Light Steady Mist adds Dimension to Enduro (October 07, 2007)
The light steady mist/rain that fell all Saturday afternoon added a unique dimension to the Ellenn Plastics Ultimate Enduro. A field of 23 cars took to the track shortly after 2:00pm in the first of three 100 lap segments. The wet track surface provided drivers with some pretty slippery conditions causing many to unexpected lose control. Cars without windshield wipers had to occasionally head to the pit area to have their windshields cleaned off so they could see. #8 Dan Pearce was the first to reach 100 laps in the first segment. Pearce was followed by #23 Kevin Nixey and #15 Curtis Nixey.

After a brief break all twenty three cars, many with different drivers, headed out for the second segment. This segment was won by #63 Perry Herr from Lanigan, SK. #88 driven by Ben Pogoda was second and #44 Lanny Sydia came in third. The third segment was won by #85 Leo Mireau who was followed by #8 Dan Pearce in second and #68 Al/Jason Beaudry from Wynyard, SK.

The overall winner on the afternoon was #8 Dan Pearce with a total of 296 laps covered over the three segments. The #68 car was second with 294 laps. #63 Perry Herr was third and #81 Barry Stefaniuk was fourth, each finishing 291 laps. [For full results click here].

Alberta Rancher Enters Enduro (October 03, 2007)
Michael Hart, a rancher from Hanna, Alberta is the first out-of-province driver to register for this Saturday's Ellenn Plastics Ultimate Enduro. Hart will be driving a 1978 Camaro with the #56 posted on its side. Hart's entry brings the number of pre-registered drivers to 9, which, based on all racers traditional tardiness, bodes well for a car count in excess of 25 cars for Saturday. Drivers are reminded that pre-registration will reduce their wait time at the back gate Saturday. To pre-register, simply complete the entry form included with the Enduro rules and fax the completed form to the business office at 1.306.956.0607.

Not to be outdone by the mother/daughter duo, Don Pogoda has formed a father/son duo with 20 year old son Ben. Don and Ben will share driving duties behind the wheel of the #88 1978 Monte Carlo. Track Records Continue to Fall (October 02, 2007)
Prior to this past Saturday's Points Championship at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway, Sport Compact Mini Stock drivers, #19 Aaron Anderson and #41 JIm Barnsley, as well as Pro Truck driver #69 PJ Kondra had registered their intentions to take a run at the existing track records in their respective divisions.

First up, Barnsley lowered #78 Matt Bartsch's existing Sport Compact Mini Stock mark of 18.128 seconds twice, with his first lap time of 18.069 seconds, and then with his second lap time of at 17.944 seconds. This second lap was even lower than the Sport Compact Mini Stock Invitational record of 17.977 seconds.

Barnsley's claim to fame was short lived, as no more than two minutes later the second lap of the Anderson/Voss car recorded a time of 17.889 to better Barnsley by 0.055 seconds. Anderson/Voss's first lap time was 18.014 seconds.

Next up, #69 Kondra eclipsed #1 Mike Dionne's existing Pro Truck record of 17.282 with a first lap time of 17.073 seconds.  Kondra's second lap was slightly slower at 17.109 seconds.

The difference between Division and Invitational records and the reason they are tracked separately is that records set by cars during invitational events do not necessarily meet the technical specifications set out in the rules of the Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association.  For example, the current Street Stock and Thunder Stock invitational records were set by cars legal under the Regina Auto Racing Club rules, allowing the use of Hoosier racing tires. Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association , versus Saskatoon's mandatory treaded street tires.

Stefaniuk Fan Favourite (October 02, 2007)
Twenty four year stock car racing veteran Barry Stefaniuk was proclaimed the Fans Favourite driver during last Saturday's Points Championship. Stefaniuk, a mechanic by trade is certainly no stranger to racing; his parents have been going to the races ever since stock car racing took place on 8th Street East.

Driving the familiar #81 Stefaniuk says he "wants to keep racing until he can't race anymore."  Stefaniuk has raced on dirt in Biggar, Outlook, Big River, Wadena and Price Albert. He has been in demolition derby's at Credit Union Centre and the Exhibition. He's raced at 8th street, the Exhibition, Bridge City Speedway and now Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. Stefaniuk gets such a rush out of racing he'll "race anything on wheels".

Stefaniuk's greatest racing moment was "winning the last regular season race at Bridge City Speedway". This year, out of 33 races, Stefaniuk reached the podium 22 times, with 5 wins, 11 second place finishes and 6 thirds. Congratulations Barry - the fans couldn't have made a better choice.
